Anguilla is a good Caribbean destination for scuba divers. Anguilla is sited in the Caribbean’s and enclosed by a very large number of islands, islets, caves and reefs. Anguilla is located in the West Indies, a name that Christopher Columbus gave the area based on his misconception that he had reached Asia when he named the area after leaving Europe in the name of king, country and exploration.

The salinity around Anguilla is lower than the salinity in the Atlantic and the basin has a very low tidal range. Anguilla water temperatures are always pleasant and the average water temperature is 75°F / 24°C, which makes Anguilla a perfect dive destination. The Caribbean Sea was formerly known for piracy and scuba divers who enjoy wreck diving will find wrecks in large quantities. Divers that makes deep dives prefer to use a wetsuit that protects from the lower water temperatures during the period from December to March, a half wetsuit is sufficient from April to November. In the summer time, the period May to October, its warm enough to dive without clothes since the water is so warm. The currents surrounding Anguilla moves counter-clockwise. The water of the Caribbean Sea enters via the Lesser Antilles, the water is warmed by the Caribbean sun. It then exits through the Yucatan Channel and forms the Gulf Stream

The geological history of the area is fascinating and prehistoric volcanic activity created the islands, when magma streaming from cracks in the earths surface meet the water and cooled down. The coral reefs surrounding Anguilla has been the home of for generations of calcium carbonated based corals that created the reefs. A coral needs a suitable surface to attach it self on, the lava stone around Anguilla is perfect for this purpose. As one coral polyp dies used as an anchor to attach them selves on and this is how coral reefs grows. Coral reefs are primarily found in tropical areas with warm waters such as the water in the Caribbean Sea. The waters around Anguilla are actually ideal for coral reefs, due to the warm and very clear water. A high visibility combined with the sunny weather allows the corals to get all the sun light they require and the energy is used by the corals to grow. The coral are not capable of photosynthesis, instead they live in symbiosis with microscopic algae capable of photosynthesis which transform the sunlight to energy for the coral. This relationship is one of many that gives us an idea of the complexity of the marine world. Anguilla and its surrounding waters are bustling with marine life. The water allows you to dive with an abundance of fish and lower life forms found in the sea such as sea snails and sea cucumbers. There is also a good chance that you can encounter larger sea species, such as turtles and sharks.
